The 2022 Tesoro Titans will be remembered as the most accomplished team in the 20 year history of Tesoro Baseball. They rewrote the Tesoro record books in route to a 28 - 8 season, the program's first CIF Southern Section Baseball Championship, and Tesoro High School's first ever CIF State Championship.
After opening the season with a program record 8 - 0 start, and then extending their record to 16 - 1, the Titans vaulted up to #6 in the LA Times SoCal Baseball rankings. The Titans faced a difficult South Coast League schedule, finishing with a 6 - 6 league record, and closing the regular season with a 20 - 8 record.
The Titans began post-season play seeded #3 of 40 teams in the Division IV playoff bracket, opening with a 16-5 road win over Don Lugo (Mt. Baldy League Champion) and an 8-2 road win over Culver City (Bay League runner-up). The playoffs then shifted to Titan Field, where the Titans took on the Foothill League runner-up Valencia Vikings in the quarterfinal round, emerging with a 9th inning 1-0 walkoff win, a playoff extra innings thriller.
Titan Field was the setting again for the semifinal round, as a packed home crowd watched the Titans square off against the 22 - 9 El Modena Vanguards, Champions of the North Hills League. The Titans punched their ticket to the CIF-SS Championship Game with a hard fought 6-4 win over the Vanguards.
The morning of May 21, 2022 -- Championship Saturday -- started with a pep rally at Tesoro High School, with family, friends, and fans sending the TItans off in style on a chartered bus to the Championship Game at Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Goodwin was packed with over 3,000 fans as the Titans took on the 24 - 5 Freeway League runner-up Fullerton High School Indians. Despite the location, Tesoro was the home team, by way of its #3 seeding against the #4 seeded Indians. The Titans continued their historic run, winning the Championship Game 3-0, and securing Tesoro's first CIF-SS Baseball Championship.
Both Tesoro and runner-up Fullerton advanced to the CIF State Championship playoffs for the Southern California Region. Tesoro opened the CIF State Championships as the #1 seed, securing a 1-0 home win over the CIF-San Diego Section Champion Mission Bay Buccaneers. Next up, following a one day break for the Tesoro Class of 2022 Graduation Ceremony, the Titans notched their 8th win in a row with a 7-2 semifinal victory over the 28 - 4 Moreno Valley Vikings, Champions of the Sunbelt League.
The state championship game on June 4th would be a rematch of the CIF-SS championship game, with the #1 TItans taking on the #2 seed Fullerton Indians. It would be a quick turnaround for the Titans, with Saturday's championship game back-to-back after Friday's semifinal game, and the 9 Titan Seniors spending their break between games celebrating Grad Night with their fellow 2022 graduates at Universal Studios. Turns out they don't need sleep, as the Titans again emerged victorious against Fullerton, winning Tesoro's first State Championship in a 6-4 thriller.
It was a season to remember for the Titans and everyone associated with the program. A program best 28 - 8 record, two 8-game win streaks, finishing the season with 9 consecutive wins, and setting up the 2023 Titans with the opportunity to break the program's 10-game win streak record. Check out the page below for some highlights of their historic championship season. The 2022 team will be remembered forever as the first to win a CIF-SS title and a CIF State Championship, establishing a new benchmark for success at Tesoro Baseball.
